Yongin Special City has further strengthened its status as a cutting-edge semiconductor hub city. The ‘Advanced Semiconductor Mass Production Linked Mini-Fab Infrastructure Construction Project’ to be built in Yongin Semiconductor Cluster, Wonsam-myeon, Cheoin-gu, passed the preliminary feasibility study at the National Research and Development Project Evaluation General Committee of the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on the 28th.

This project aims to build a mini-fab, a facility that will support semiconductor material, component, and equipment (SME) companies to test and verify the technologies and products they develop in an environment identical to the actual semiconductor mass production process.

This project, which is being carried out at a scale of approximately 1 trillion won, is being jointly invested by the government, Yongin Special City, Gyeonggi Province, and SK Hynix, and will be fully launched in the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster with the goal of starting construction in 2025. The minifab is equipped with the latest process and measurement equipment based on 12-inch wafers, allowing small and medium-sized companies to verify the reliability of mass production of their products together with global semiconductor chip manufacturers.

Mayor Lee Sang-il of Yongin Special City said, “The confirmation of this mini-fab project will be an important opportunity for Yongin to emerge as the world’s best semiconductor-centered city,” adding, “We expect that small and medium-sized companies will verify their technological prowess and strengthen their competitiveness, thereby contributing greatly to the development of the semiconductor ecosystem.”

This project has been a long-awaited project in the semiconductor industry. In particular, the minifab is the first facility in Korea capable of evaluating the performance of 10nm-class semiconductor materials, parts, and equipment in a semiconductor mass production environment, and is expected to contribute to further enhancing the global competitiveness of the semiconductor industry.

Yongin Special City plans to continue to cooperate with global semiconductor companies, including SK Hynix, to lead the development of the semiconductor industry at the regional and national levels.
