Hanam City (Mayor Lee Hyeon-jae) announced on the 24th that the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s Metropolitan Area Transportation Committee approved the basic plan for the construction of the Gangdong-Hanam-Namyangju Line (extension of Subway Line 9), giving momentum to the project’s progress.

The ‘Gangdong-Hanam-Namyangju Line’ is a railway line that will be built with a total project cost of KRW 2.824 trillion, with 8 stations from Gangil-dong in Gangdong-gu, Seoul to Misa Riverside City in Hanam-si, Gyeonggi-do to Wangsuk New City in Namyangju-si to Jinjeop 2nd District.
Gyeonggi Province, the project execution agency, is planning to begin the project in earnest by starting with the ‘basic and detailed design’ starting with this approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
Hanam City expects that when the construction project of the Gangdong-Hanam-Namyangju Line, a metropolitan railway network connecting Seoul and Gyeonggi-do, is completed, the extreme traffic congestion in Misagang Riverside City will be alleviated, accessibility to Gangnam, Seoul, the largest business district in Korea, will be improved, and commuting times will be significantly reduced.
A Hanam City official explained, “Once the Line 9 extension project is completed, the commuting time for residents of Misagang Riverside City who work in Gangnam, Seoul is expected to be cut in half.” He continued, “Currently, it takes about 44 minutes to get to Bongeunsa Station on Line 9, which is adjacent to the office-dense Teheran-ro area in Gangnam, after departing from Misagang Station on Line 5 and transferring twice. However, going forward, you will be able to board Line 9 at the tentatively named Shinmisa Station and arrive at Bongeunsa Station in just 22 minutes without transferring.”
In addition, in the basic plan approved this time, the turnaround point for regular trains has been reflected from the existing plan of 942 stop (tentative name Godeok Gangil 1st District Station) to 944 stop (tentative name Sinmisa Station). In the future, through consultations with the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the train operation plan, we plan to actively pursue the possibility of operating regular trains and express trains simultaneously.
Mayor Lee Hyeon-jae explained, “After persuading relevant organizations including the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Seoul Metropolitan Government, and Gyeonggi Province in solidarity with Gangdong-gu, we were able to extend the turnaround point for regular trains to the tentatively named Sinmisa Station.”
In addition, the market said, “Based on the approval of the basic plan in the future, when promoting detailed design, we plan to closely consult with Gyeonggi Province regarding the locations of subway entrances and exits so that citizens can conveniently use the subway. We will also make active efforts to bring forward the subway opening date from the original target year (2031).”
