At approximately 9:03 a.m. on December 29, Jeju Air Flight 7C2216 departing from Bangkok, Thailand crashed while attempting to land at Muan International Airport in South Jeolla Province, crashing into the outer wall of the airport runway.

The aircraft was attempting a belly landing when its landing gear failed after suffering a ‘bird strike’ in mid-air, in which a bird was sucked into the right engine.

Due to the fire that broke out when the plane crashed into the outer wall of the Muan Airport runway, only the tail section of the aircraft was identifiable, while the rest was either destroyed or completely burned down.

As of 2:47 p.m., two crew members, one man and one woman, were rescued, and 124 people (54 men, 57 women, 13 unconfirmed) were confirmed dead. Fire authorities said, “Except for the two survivors, all (other passengers) are presumed to have died.”

At the time of the accident, a total of 181 people were on board, including 175 passengers and 6 crew members. The passengers included 173 Koreans and 2 Thais.
