Cheonan City Strengthens Citizen Safety Net by Activating Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Reporting

Cheonan City has stepped up the installation and management of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to protect the lives of citizens in emergency situations. On December 20, the city announced that it will thoroughly conduct regular inspections and guidance and supervision to ensure that AEDs operate normally, and that it will strengthen the safety net of the local community by activating reports to public health centers from voluntary installation organizations.

Role and mandatory installation of automated external defibrillators (AEDs)

An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a medical device that analyzes the heart condition of a cardiac arrest patient through electric pads attached to the chest and, if necessary, delivers an electric shock to restore the heart rhythm to normal. It plays an important role in saving lives in emergency situations.

Currently, AED installation is mandatory in public health care institutions, multi-family housing with 500 or more households, workplaces with 300 or more regular employees, and multi-use facilities, and the number of cases of voluntary installation in subway stations, movie theaters, and educational institutions is increasing.

The Importance of Sharing AED Location Information

Cheonan City explained that if you report the installation of an AED to the public health center, the information will be made public through the emergency medical information provision website ( www.e-gen.kr) and a smartphone app, and anyone can easily check the location. Through this, citizens can quickly find and use a nearby AED in an emergency situation.

However, institutions that voluntarily installed AEDs are not required to report to the public health center, so the location information of unreported AEDs is often not shared and not managed. To solve this problem, Cheonan City is actively encouraging voluntary installation institutions to report their installations and is working to expand the sharing of AED location information.

Efforts to strengthen AED management and safety nets

Cheonan City is ensuring that the equipment is always operating in the best condition through regular inspection and maintenance of AEDs. In addition, it is strengthening cooperation with autonomous installation organizations to inform citizens of the location of AEDs and making multifaceted efforts to improve accessibility in emergency situations.

Seobuk-gu Public Health Center Director Lee Hyeon-gi said, “Sharing the location information of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) is an important practice for the public good,” and added, “I hope that autonomous installation organizations will participate in strengthening the safety net of the community by reporting their installation to the public health center.”

Encouraging continuous improvement and participation for citizen safety

Cheonan City plans to continue to systematically manage AED installation and reporting, and actively provide relevant information so that citizens can prepare for emergency situations. In addition, it emphasized that it will do its best to encourage the participation of citizens and organizations so that Cheonan can become a safer city.

If the installation and management of AEDs are carried out smoothly, Cheonan City is expected to take an important step toward building a safe community where citizens can receive prompt and appropriate emergency treatment.
