Goyang Special City will conduct a demand survey for the ‘Food Waste Electronic Tag (RFID) Volume Meter Support Project’ in 2025 to reduce food waste and processing costs. This project will expand the support target from the existing 150 or more households in apartment complexes to 60 or more households, and complexes wishing to participate should submit a demand survey by January 3, 2024.

Goyang Special City (Mayor Lee Dong-hwan) announced that it will fully implement the ‘2025 Food Waste Electronic Tag (RFID) Volume Meter Support Project’ to reduce food waste discharge and manage it efficiently. To this end, the city will conduct a demand survey targeting apartment complexes with 60 or more households, and complexes wishing to participate in the support project must submit a demand survey form by January 3, 2024.

The electronic tag (RFID) volume meter is a volume metering system recommended by the Ministry of Environment that charges a fee based on the weight of food waste discarded using a disposal card. This method is highly effective in reducing food waste and can keep the disposal area clean, so it has recently been gaining attention in many apartment complexes.

According to Goyang City, the food waste reduction rate of complexes using electronic tag volume meters was found to be over 40%. In addition, the method of charging a fee for the amount of waste discharged by each household through the volume meter has the advantage of clearly implementing the principle of burden on the discharger, unlike the existing uniform charging method.

In this project, the support target has been expanded from the existing 150-household or more apartment complex to 60-household or more. Through this, the plan is to encourage more apartment complexes to install electronic tag volume meters and participate in reducing food waste.

City officials said, “The electronic tag (RFID) volume metering machines will increase citizens’ willingness to voluntarily reduce food waste, which will have the dual effects of reducing disposal costs and carbon emissions,” adding, “We will continue to expand the distribution of electronic tag volume metering machines so that more citizens can benefit.”

Meanwhile, electronic tag (RFID) volume scales are receiving a great response because they can immediately dispose of even small amounts of food waste, so there is no need to store them in the house, and they can also keep the disposal site clean. Through this demand survey, the city plans to secure the volume of volume scale support projects in advance in 2025 and devise a plan to maximize the reduction effect.

This project, which aims to improve citizen convenience and protect the environment, is expected to contribute to creating a sustainable city by achieving two goals simultaneously: reducing food waste and reducing carbon emissions.
