Korea’s platform screen door (PSD) technology is gaining attention in the global market. This technology, which combines safety and efficiency, is a key facility responsible for passenger safety in urban railways and is highly regarded in the global railway market.
Screen doors prevent accidents where passengers fall onto the train tracks and play a role in improving the efficiency of heating and cooling in stations. Korea has been focusing on developing screen door technology since the early 2000s and has actively introduced it to its urban railway system. Currently, about 99% of subways in major cities such as Seoul and Busan are installed with screen doors, proving their safety and operational efficiency.

Korean screen door technology has a competitive edge in the global market in terms of precise motion control, durability, and ease of maintenance. Domestic companies have taken their technology to the next level by developing the world’s first wireless communication-based screen door system. This has been recognized in overseas markets as well, reducing installation and operating costs and increasing system reliability.
Korean screen door technology is currently being exported to Asia, the Middle East, Europe, etc. Recently, advanced cities such as Singapore, Hong Kong, and Dubai have adopted Korean technology to modernize their transportation systems. In particular, Korean screen doors installed in Singapore’s subways are receiving great acclaim locally for their precise opening and closing speeds and safety sensors.
Domestic companies are continuously innovating screen door technology and presenting solutions combined with smart technology. For example, a real-time monitoring system utilizing IoT (Internet of Things) technology helps check the status of equipment in real time and solve problems immediately. In addition, AI-based data analysis is optimizing maintenance cycles and reducing costs.

The government is also actively supporting the overseas expansion of screen door technology. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy are investing in the development of related technologies and helping Korean companies become competitive in the international market. An official said, “Screen door technology is playing an important role in promoting the excellence of Korean transportation technology,” and “We will further expand our position in the global market through continuous innovation and technological enhancement.”
The success of Korean screen door technology has a meaning beyond simple export. It is proof that the technology development philosophy that prioritizes safety and efficiency is recognized around the world. It remains to be seen whether Korean screen doors will be adopted in more cities in the future and become a new standard for global transportation technology.
