Sejong City’s project ‘Yeongi Hyanggyo, Connecting People and Culture’, which reinterprets the functions of traditional educational institutions, hyanggyo, in a modern way and connects them with the local community, has been selected as the representative brand for national heritage utilization projects by the National Heritage Administration. With this selection, Sejong City will receive support for three years from 2025 to 2027, including budget support, publication of promotional brochures, and promotion of the World National Heritage Industry Exhibition.
At the 2024 Our Hometown National Heritage Utilization Excellence Project Awards Ceremony held on the 19th, Sejong City achieved the feat of being selected as the representative brand. ‘Yeongi Hyanggyo, Connecting People and Culture’ is a program that harmonizes tradition and modernity and has been well-received by local residents and experts. This project, which consists of citizen participation lectures, focuses on promoting local tradition, connecting it with modern culture, and promoting communication between generations and classes.

The course content consisted of diverse activities such as local petitions, civil service examination experience, making traditional books, experiencing traditional tea ware, and exploring cultural heritage sites. Through this, citizens had the opportunity to experience the historical value of hyanggyo and learn new things about regional identity and cultural heritage.
Sejong City Cultural Heritage Division Director Yoo Byeong-hak said, “This selection as a representative brand is the result of national recognition of Sejong City’s efforts and achievements in utilizing national heritage,” and added, “We will continue to promote the region’s history and traditions and grow into a cultural city together with its citizens.”
In addition to this project, Sejong City is continuously operating various national heritage utilization projects. The regional national heritage education activation project, the living national heritage project, and the traditional mountain temple utilization project provide rich cultural experiences to local residents and visitors, and play a role in spreading the value of regional national heritage.
With ‘Yeongi Hyanggyo, connecting people and culture’ selected as the representative brand, Sejong City has established itself as a leading model for utilizing national heritage. Through future activities, it is expected that traditional heritages such as Hyanggyo will play a more meaningful role in modern society.
