Goyang Special City has obtained smart city certification from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in 2024. In the metropolitan sector, Goyang City was selected alone and was the first city in northern Gyeonggi Province to be certified as a smart city along with Uijeongbu City. Goyang Special City (Mayor Lee Dong-hwan) announced on November 25 that it had received the 2024 Smart City certification hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. In the large city category, Goyang City was the only city selected, and in the medium-sized city category, Uijeongbu City was selected, and both cities had the honor of being the first in northern Gyeonggi Province to receive Smart City certification.

Smart city certification is evaluated based on 53 detailed evaluation indicators in three areas: innovation, governance/system, and service technology/infrastructure. Goyang City once again confirmed its status as a smart city by scoring a high score of over 1,400 points out of 2,000.

The city applied for the smart city certification competition in October of this year, and was evaluated through an on-site inspection conducted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in November. In particular, Goyang City was recognized for its achievements in technological convergence through the operation of an integrated video control system utilizing artificial intelligence (AI), and its real-time abnormal situation detection technology received high evaluations. In addition, the citizen-led social problem-solving case based on the Living Lab and the creation of a self-sustaining data industry ecosystem utilizing big data were also cited as major achievements.

Based on this smart city certification, Goyang City plans to create more innovative smart technologies and infrastructure in conjunction with the 2023 hub-type smart city development competition last year. In particular, it has set a goal of strengthening the model for discovering and solving urban problems through the living lab method in which citizens directly participate, and establishing itself as a leading city in the smart field through regional innovation.

City officials said, “The smart city certification has proven that Goyang Special City is in a position to lead the development of smart cities nationwide,” and added, “We will continue to focus on developing innovative smart technologies and expanding infrastructure to provide citizens with a better daily life and future.”

This achievement is expected to serve as an opportunity for Goyang City to pursue sustainable development through advanced technology and data-based city operation and to further strengthen its competitiveness in the smart city sector.
