Yongin Special City is moving forward with the development of science education and nurturing talent by expanding science-focused schools. At a meeting held in the mayor’s office on the 20th, Yongin Special City Mayor Lee Sang-il expressed regret over the failure to attract a science high school and emphasized, “We will review operating science-focused school programs and investing in experimental equipment so that high-level science education can be provided in general high schools.”

This meeting was organized to encourage parents and educators who devoted themselves to the process of establishing science high schools and to discuss alternatives for the future. The mayor said, “I would like to thank the parents who collected the consent forms of 3,180 citizens,” and “Yongin is experiencing a growing demand for science talent due to population growth and the promotion of large-scale semiconductor projects. We will continue to challenge ourselves to establish science high schools, and for now, we will prioritize the fostering of science-focused schools in general high schools.”

Parents requested, “It is unfortunate that we failed to attract a science high school, but we need the city and the Office of Education to make efforts to expand science-focused schools so that children can study in a better environment.” In response, Jeong Suk-kyung, the director of the Yongin Office of Education, said, “There are currently four science-focused schools in operation in Yongin: Yongin Baekhyun High School, Suji High School, Cheongdeok High School, and Chodang High School,” and explained, “Although budget constraints at the provincial office of education are an obstacle to additional designations, if a science-focused school is designated, improvements to the science laboratory environment and support for equipment will be provided.”

Kim Hoe-man, principal of Yongin High School, who attended the meeting, said, “In order to strengthen science education, it is essential to expand experimental equipment and facilities,” and requested financial investment to expand science-focused schools in general high schools. Lee Seung-mi, president of the parents’ association at Heungdeok High School, said, “There is a high demand for science education from students and parents,” and suggested, “We need to create specialized science education programs that reflect the voices of schools.”

Mayor Lee Sang-il said, “Rather than being disappointed by the failure to attract a science high school, it is important to come up with realistic alternatives,” and added, “We will actively review budget support measures at the city level in cooperation with the Yongin Office of Education to expand science-focused schools.”

Meanwhile, the city plans to strengthen public education in Yongin and continue efforts to foster future talent by establishing a new semiconductor high school and operating specialized high schools with the goal of opening in March 2027.
