Seongnam City opened the ‘Sungkyunkwan University Fabless AI Seongnam Research Center’ at Kinstar Tower in Jeongja-dong on the 26th and began full-scale operation. The research center is expected to become a center for advanced technology development and talent training, focusing on system semiconductor and AI convergence research.

Seongnam City (Mayor Shin Sang-jin) held an opening ceremony for the ‘Sungkyunkwan University Fabless AI Seongnam Research Center’ located on the 13th floor of Kinstar Tower in Jeongja-dong on the 26th and began full-scale operation. The event was attended by approximately 100 people including Mayor Shin Sang-jin, Sungkyunkwan University President Yoo Ji-beom, and executives from major companies such as Microsoft Korea, Google Korea, and AWS, to congratulate Seongnam City on establishing a base for cutting-edge technology research.
The research center, which is built on an area of approximately 500㎡, is equipped with a training center and research/office space, and plans to carry out various activities centered on system semiconductor design and AI convergence research. This was done as a follow-up measure to the agreement on creating an industry-academia-research-government innovation ecosystem in the system semiconductor and AI industry signed between Seongnam City and Sungkyunkwan University in April.

Starting on the 26th, the center will operate an internship course for employees of semiconductor companies and an advanced system semiconductor design academy for students majoring in related fields and those with experience. In 2025, specialized education courses such as various education programs tailored to industrial demand, an academy on AI and big data, and a small and medium-sized enterprise leaders forum will be expanded.
Seongnam City aims to strengthen the competitiveness of advanced industries through training of advanced professionals targeting employees of fabless and AI companies, joint research between industry and academia, and technology commercialization.
Meanwhile, Seongnam City is continuously promoting related projects such as the establishment of a system semiconductor cluster, training of design personnel, and establishment of a test bed center, and is establishing itself as the center of the national system semiconductor industry. The System Semiconductor Development Support Center, which opened in Pangyo in September of this year, supports everything from AI semiconductor design to commercialization, and is attracting attention as Seongnam City’s innovation hub.
Mayor Shin Sang-jin said, “The Jeongja-dong Fabless AI Seongnam Research Center and various cutting-edge research facilities in Pangyo will serve as the foundation for growing Seongnam into a special city for the 4th industrial revolution,” and “We will make a leap forward as the center of Korea’s cutting-edge industry through customized talent development and research support.”
