Yangcheon-gu (Mayor Lee Ki-jae) announced on the 19th that it plans to build a “future lifelong learning city where all generations grow together” from childhood to old age with “health,” “inclusion,” “dynamism,” and “connection” as core values in order to go beyond being a representative educational city in Korea and become a sustainable global learning city, marking the 20th anniversary of its designation as a lifelong learning city.

On the afternoon of the 18th, the district held a lifelong education council at the Yangcheon Digital Media Center to declare its vision as a global learning city and share the core values and implementation strategies of Yangcheon as a future lifelong learning city.
The district has established a vision of a ‘future lifelong learning city where all generations grow and advance together’ by conducting research on a mid- to long-term development plan to foster a lifelong learning culture and make a leap forward as a sustainable ‘global learning city’. In addition, to realize this vision, four core values were established: ▲Sustainable learning city ▲Healthy and well-being learning city ▲Fair and inclusive learning city ▲Dynamic and connected learning city. Based on this, the plan is to create a learning city where all residents become owners and grow together, where the quality of life improves and happiness grows, and where no one is left out and where learning is connected to the world.
The city is also preparing to join the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC), which has about 300 cities in 80 countries around the world. By establishing partnerships with UNESCO learning cities, the city plans to exchange information such as the latest research results and performance cases related to lifelong learning, and strengthen future policy capacity to respond to the demand for global learning cities.
Yangcheon-gu has maintained its status for 20 years since it was first designated as a lifelong learning city in 2005. In particular, as the paradigm of life and learning becoming one has been emphasized recently and the role of local governments in lifelong education has increased, the district is making multifaceted efforts to build a sustainable lifelong education environment.
For example, in March of this year, the ‘Lifelong Learning Integrated Portal’ was established, integrating information on approximately 3,000 courses scattered across 60 or so institutions into a single portal, and in July of last year, the ‘Shinwol Lifelong Learning Center’, a technology-specialized lifelong learning facility in a relatively neglected area, was opened, winning the Good Policy Excellence Award at the 1st National Lifelong Learning City Festival.
Yangcheon-gu Mayor Lee Gi-jae said, “Based on our district’s excellent students, schools, and enthusiasm for education, we are creating an environment in which anyone can learn anything in Angcheon-gu in order to become the representative education district of the Republic of Korea.” He added, “We will continue to proactively respond to the diverse learning needs of our residents and build an accessible lifelong learning environment to create Yangcheon, a sustainable city of learning.”
