Mayor Lee Sang-il of Yongin Special City expressed regret to the citizens for failing to accept the science high school application and announced that he would focus on opening a semiconductor high school. On the 17th, Yongin Special City Mayor Lee Sang-il said, “I apologize to the citizens who had hoped for a science high school,” regarding the fact that Yongin City was not selected in the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education’s preliminary designation of a science high school for Gyeonggi Province. He added, “We will push forward with the opening of a semiconductor high school that has passed the Ministry of Education’s central investment review without a hitch.”
Yongin Semiconductor High School, which passed the central investment review last April, will be established with an investment of 45.5 billion won on the site of Namgok Elementary School in Cheoin-gu. It is scheduled to open in March 2027 and will operate with 2 departments and 18 classes. Yongin is the only city in Gyeonggi-do to have a semiconductor-specialized high school, and the plan is to focus on nurturing semiconductor talent through this.

The city also plans to implement various policies to strengthen public education centered on general high schools. In particular, it will promote the establishment of practical arts high schools to foster talent in the arts. The city is concretizing the plan to establish a practical arts school through consultation with the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education and has also requested support from relevant ministries.
Yongin City is introducing an industry-government-academic cooperation model to support employment and university advancement for students of specialized high schools. Students of specialized high schools such as Yongin Bio High School will receive practical education through university-linked education and industry-tailored contracted departments. Students of golf departments will receive support for advancement to Yongin University and employment after graduation, and the customized talent development model is gaining attention.

Support for small schools is also being strengthened. Jangpyeong Elementary School and Baekbong Elementary School in Baekam-myeon are scheduled to build school gymnasiums in the second half of next year, and Jangpyeong Elementary School is also being operated as an ‘Atopic Dermatitis Healing School’, receiving high satisfaction from students and parents.
The city is actively promoting the establishment of several new schools, including Giheung 1 Middle School (tentative name) and Yeoksam Elementary and Middle School Integrated School, in preparation for the increase in the school-age population and the demand for education in developing regions. Construction of the schools will begin in earnest next year, with the goal of opening in 2026 and 2027.
The mayor emphasized, “Yongin has the optimal environment for nurturing future talents as the semiconductor industry ecosystem is being established,” and “We will do our best to improve the educational environment to meet the diverse educational needs of citizens.”
