Yongin Special City announced on the 26th that it will hold a ‘Reading Marathon’ from January 2 to October 31, 2025 to spread the reading culture of its citizens. This competition, which combines reading and a marathon, has become Yongin Special City’s representative reading promotion program, and is a unique campaign in which participants set reading goals by reading books and writing book reviews and complete the race.
The reading marathon is divided into 7 categories: ▲Toddlers ▲Elementary Reading Notes ▲Elementary Lower Grades ▲Elementary Upper Grades ▲Teenagers ▲General (Adults) ▲Family (up to 5 people) so that people of all ages can participate. Excluding the ‘Toddlers’ and ‘Elementary Reading Notes’, participants can choose from 4 courses: Walking (5,000m), Short Course (10,000m), Half Course (21,100m), and Full Course (42,195m).
Participants must read books and write book reviews targeting the course they have chosen. Elementary school students must write reviews of at least 50 characters per book, and teenagers and adults must write reviews of at least 100 characters per book on the Reading Marathon website.
In the case of infants, instead of writing a book review, borrowing 130 books from the city’s public library will be recognized as completion. The ‘Elementary Reading Note’ course for elementary school students who have difficulty using computers will be recognized as completion if they submit a borrowing history of 80 books and a reading note with more than 50 reading reviews.
Completion participants will receive benefits such as certificates, souvenirs, and increased borrowing rights from public libraries, and the participant who writes the most book reviews will be awarded a prize after the event.
In the 2024 Reading Marathon, 5,801 citizens participated, an increase of 237 from the previous year, and the number of finishers increased by 395 to 1,847. An official from Yongin Special City said, “The Reading Marathon is greatly contributing to forming reading habits and increasing the amount of reading among citizens,” and “I hope that many citizens will participate in 2025 and have a fruitful year through reading.”
Anyone who is a regular member of the Yongin City Library can apply for the reading marathon through the library website.
