Sejong Special Self-Governing City Mayor Choi Min-ho announced that he would prioritize the five essential tasks this year, including returning to the original purpose and essence of Sejong City and elevating the status of the administrative capital. He presented a vision to complete it as a future strategic capital of creation and challenge, and urged the participation of citizens and public officials.
At the city inauguration ceremony held at the Sejong City Hall Women’s Office on the 2nd, Mayor Choi, with some 300 employees in attendance, officially pledged to realize the “5 essentials of Sejong City”: ▲administrative capital ▲Korean culture city ▲economic revitalization ▲garden city ▲establishment of civic spirit. On this day, Mayor Choi defined “the essence of Sejong City is to become a new standard city of the Republic of Korea that achieves balanced national development and sustainable future innovation,” and emphasized his actions based on this.

He presented ‘Bonripdoseng (本立道生)’ as the city administration’s four-character idiom for this year, conveying the philosophy that establishing the essence opens up all paths. Mayor Choi stated, “Putting the lives and happiness of citizens first and achieving the prosperity of the nation together is the basics for our progress,” and mentioned strengthening the essence of the administrative capital as the first task. He also said that he would do his best to establish Sejong City as a complete administrative capital through constitutional amendments and special law amendments.
The strengthening of Sejong City’s status as a city of Hangul culture was also emphasized. Mentioning Sejong City’s designation as a city of Hangul culture last year, Mayor Choi said, “I will inherit the spirit of King Sejong and spread Hangul culture to the world,” and pledged, “I will foster pride in Sejong City as a city of culture together with its citizens.”

Development as a garden city was also presented as a major task. “Sejong City is the only city with a lake, garden, and arboretum in the center of the city, and we will establish a garden city department this year to take the lead in achieving carbon neutrality and providing healing spaces,” he said.
As a measure to stimulate the economy, the designation of opportunity development special zones, education development special zones, and cultural special zones (Hangul Culture City) was presented as key points. Through these, it was announced that the economic situation of citizens will be improved and investment attraction will be spurred.
A plan to make this year the first year of establishing civic spirit was also revealed. He said, “Establishing pride and identity as Sejong citizens is another essence we must pursue,” and said that he would promote campaigns and policies that would allow citizens to feel a sense of roots as citizens of the capital city of the Republic of Korea.
Lastly, he urged public officials to “pour all their passion into the development of Sejong City with a spirit of creativity and challenge,” once again solidifying the direction of Sejong City’s development centered on its essence.
Meanwhile, ahead of the inauguration ceremony on this day, Mayor Choi began his first official schedule of the new year by paying his respects at Chungnyeongtap in Jochiwon-eup.
