Yongin Special City has selected and announced the area of Deokseong-ri, Idong-eup, Cheoin-gu as the site of the ‘Yongin Green Eco Park (tentative name)’ with the goal of an innovative change in household waste management. This is a preemptive response to the government’s 2026 direct landfill ban policy and is intended to establish a sustainable waste disposal system linked to regional infrastructure such as the Samsung Electronics Semiconductor National Industrial Complex and new city development.
This project will be carried out at a scale of approximately KRW 385 billion (national, provincial, and municipal funds), and an incineration facility capable of processing 500 tons of household waste per day is planned to be installed by 2030. In addition, the heat energy and electricity produced by waste incineration will be supplied to the ‘Yongin Advanced System Semiconductor National Industrial Complex’ and ‘Yongin 1st and 2nd Techno Valleys’, establishing them as eco-friendly energy production bases.
In particular, it will not be limited to a simple waste disposal facility, but will be developed into a complex cultural and sports facility with a water park, swimming pool, exhibition hall, observation tower, and ecological trail, and will be reborn as a space to support the quality of life and leisure of local residents. In addition, infrastructure such as roads and water and sewage systems will also be installed.
The city promised to communicate closely with local residents during this process and to promote transparent and cooperative business through various participatory programs such as town hall meetings, briefing sessions, and tours of advanced incinerators.
Currently, Yongin Special City processes 300 tons and 70 tons of waste per day in Geum-eo-ri, Pogok-eup, Cheoin-gu and Pungdeokcheon-dong, Suji-gu, respectively, but this is not enough to handle the rapidly increasing demand for household waste. The city estimates that it will need to process 658 tons of waste per day by 2030.
The location of ‘Yongin Green Eco Park’ was decided after about 20 months of discussion and 10 meetings by the site selection committee consisting of residents, experts, and city council members. Deokseong-ri, Idong-eup was selected as the final candidate site due to its high feasibility evaluation score, active requests for attraction from local residents, and high evaluations for its connectivity with surrounding industrial complexes.
Mayor Lee Sang-il of Yongin Special City said, “Yongin Green Eco Park will not simply be a facility for waste disposal, but will become a center for eco-friendly energy production and a local landmark,” and expressed his gratitude, saying, “The swift progress of the project was possible thanks to the active cooperation of the residents of Idong-eup.” He also expressed his ambition to “make it a landmark that many people visit, like ‘Amager Bakke’ in Copenhagen, Denmark.”
