Yongin Special City Giheung-gu improved the roundabout near Jiseok Elementary School to create a safe school environment for children. Safety on the way to school was enhanced by reducing traffic islands, relocating crosswalks, and installing lighting towers. This improvement project, which reflects residents’ demands, is expected to make a significant contribution to preventing accidents in children’s protection zones.

Yongin Special City Giheung-gu announced on the 3rd that it has improved the roundabout near Jiseok Elementary School to enhance safety for school commuters within the children’s protection zone. This measure is the result of reflecting the demands made by Yongin Special City Mayor Lee Sang-il at a communication meeting with residents of Sanghwa-dong and Gugal-dong in May of last year.
Residents requested improvement, saying that the roundabout at the entrance to Jiseok Elementary School has a narrow radius, which threatens the safety of children going to school by causing large vehicles to invade the crosswalk when turning. In response, Mayor Lee Sang-il met with former Yongin East Police Chief Kim Seong-gu right after the meeting to report the issue, and a week later, he received a report on the improvement plan and quickly implemented it.

In this improvement project, the traffic island at the roundabout in Sanghwa-dong 684 was reduced from 8m to 3m, and the vehicle turning space was expanded. In addition, the crosswalk was moved by 4m to secure waiting space for vehicles entering the intersection.
To ensure the safety of drivers and pedestrians at night, lighting towers and road markers (ground markings) were installed, and repaving work was completed to prevent slipping on the road, creating a pleasant road environment.
In addition, a canopy was installed at a cost of 19 million won on a 14m sloped section of the Jiseok Elementary School road to prevent students from slipping when it snows or rains, further improving the safety of the school commute environment.
This improvement project, with a total project cost of 100 million won, is being evaluated as an active administrative measure by Yongin Special City to prevent safety accidents in children’s protection zones and ensure the safety of children and pedestrians.
A district official said, “This roundabout improvement has greatly improved the safety of children commuting to school,” and added, “We will continue to periodically improve the facilities in the children’s protection zones in Giheung-gu to prevent child safety accidents and create a safe traffic environment.”
