Closer to a Dementia-Free Community

Yeongdeungpo-gu is further strengthening its community-centered dementia prevention and care system through an agreement with Hallym University Kangnam Sacred Heart Hospital. This agreement was signed following the expiration of the Dementia Care Center’s consignment period, and is intended to improve the quality of dementia prevention, early detection, counseling, and care services.

Through this consignment contract, Hallym University Kangnam Sacred Heart Hospital has been selected as the consignment organization again after managing and operating the Dementia Care Center for the past three years. Through this, Yeongdeungpo-gu plans to utilize the human and material resources of Hallym University Hospital and expand specialized dementia management integrated services through a cooperative system with the university.

Yeongdeungpo-gu’s Dementia Care Center operates a variety of programs to provide comprehensive services from dementia prevention to care. These include brain and body health classes, early dementia diagnosis services, family emotional support and counseling, and dementia patient care services.

In particular, the center operates a program called ‘Gagahoho Memory Friend’ where healthy elderly people help dementia patients at home, a cognitive training program using information and communication technology, and also conducts activities to stimulate the five senses using musical instruments such as the ukulele. These activities are one of the various efforts to prevent and overcome dementia throughout the community, and last September, it received an award from the Minister of Health and Welfare as an excellent program.

Yeongdeungpo-gu District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon said, “I hope that this commission will help the Dementia Care Center become the center of dementia prevention and care within the local community,” and added, “We will work harder to create a safe community through systematic management for early detection and prevention of dementia.”

Yeongdeungpo-gu plans to further solidify its dementia-friendly environment through continued cooperation with the local community.
