Goyang Special City announced that it will close four springs that do not meet water quality standards for the sake of citizens’ health and safety. The springs to be closed are Guksabong, Myeongbong, Gwansandong, and Bongsan (Yongdu Spring), which have been consecutively judged as unfit for microorganisms in water quality tests and have lost their function as springs due to insufficient water volume.

Guksabong and Myeongbong mineral springs are designated mineral springs that have been consistently judged as unsuitable for water quality in terms of total coliform bacteria and other microorganisms since 2024. Gwansandong and Bongsan (Yongdu Spring) mineral springs are non-designated mineral springs, and have been evaluated as not being able to fulfill their functions as mineral springs due to frequent unsuitable water quality and water quantity shortages.

The city plans to post related information on the Goyang City website by December 26th before the closure, and to install notices and banners at the sites of the springs scheduled to close to notify citizens in advance. In addition, in order to minimize inconvenience to users of the springs, the city plans to promote the use of the springs for purposes other than drinking.

Yoon Geon-sang, the head of the Goyang City Waterworks and Sewerage Authority, explained that it was inevitable to stop drinking from the spring due to the prolonged poor water quality, and emphasized that the decision to close it was made to protect the health of citizens. He added that they will continue to do their best to create a spring environment where citizens can use it with confidence through thorough water quality inspections in the future.

This closure of the water source is interpreted as part of Goyang City’s policy to strengthen water quality management, and as an effort to ensure the safety of citizens through continuous monitoring and response measures.
