Goyang Special City (Mayor Lee Dong-hwan) announced on the 18th that it signed a business agreement with agricultural organizations including the Goyang City Nakwoohoe, Hanwoo Association, Poultry Association, and Cactus Research Association to reduce carbon emissions and promote resource recycling using coffee grounds.
This agreement was established to actively utilize discarded coffee grounds (coffee waste) in the agricultural and livestock sectors and jointly develop technologies to reduce diseases and damage to floricultural crops.
Coffee grounds are effective in reducing the smell of livestock manure in livestock farms and are a useful resource that can be used as organic compost for soil. They can also reduce the use of volume-based bags in coffee shops, contributing to reducing carbon emissions.
Goyang City has been conducting a coffee grounds recycling research project since 2023, collecting coffee grounds from cafes in the city and using approximately 338 tons as bedding for 14 livestock farms. The research results showed that coffee grounds are effective in improving the livestock breeding environment by reducing the smell of livestock manure by more than 95% and reducing the occurrence of harmful insects.
These achievements were possible thanks to the active cooperation of various organizations and groups, including the Goyang City Nakwoo and Hanwoo Farming Cooperative, 30 cafes that participated in collecting coffee grounds, and social enterprises.
In addition, Goyang City plans to verify the effects of using coffee ground compost to prevent diseases and pests and promote growth of horticultural (flower, cactus) crops as a secondary research. Through this, the utilization of coffee ground compost will be increased and a sustainable resource circulation model in the agricultural sector will be established.
A livestock farmer who attended the agreement ceremony said, “Coffee grounds should be actively introduced because they reduce the smell of livestock manure, resolve complaints, and are very effective in improving the livestock breeding environment,” and asked for continued interest and support from related organizations.
Mayor Lee Dong-hwan of Goyang City said, “This agreement will be an important opportunity to establish a resource recycling supply system for coffee grounds,” and added, “We will do our best to ensure that relevant departments, related organizations, and coffee shops actively cooperate to provide practical help to livestock and flower farms.”
Goyang City plans to actively promote carbon reduction and resource recycling projects using coffee grounds in the future and contribute to sustainable agriculture and environmental preservation.
