The Ministry of Environment and the oil refining industry have discussed ways to cooperate to overcome the climate crisis and have embarked on a sustainable industrial structure transformation. Minister of Environment Kim Wan-seop held a meeting with key figures in the oil refining industry at the Lotte Hotel in Seoul on December 24 and presented ways to cooperate to achieve carbon neutrality and build a circular economy.

This meeting was attended by Park Joo-sun, Chairman of the Korea Petroleum Association, and key figures from SK Energy, HD Hyundai Oilbank, S-OIL, and GS Caltex. They explained major businesses such as biofuel and chemical recycling of waste resources, and suggested the need for government system improvement and support.
Biofuel is a technology that aims to replace fossil fuels and reduce greenhouse gases. It is mainly produced using soybeans, corn, and biomass as raw materials. It is attracting attention as a key method to achieve energy conversion and carbon emission reduction at the same time. For more information, see the EPA Biofuels Report .
Chemical recycling of waste resources is a method of chemically decomposing and recycling resources such as waste plastics and waste tires. This technology has great environmental and economic value as it can simultaneously achieve resource circulation and greenhouse gas emission reduction. More information can be found at the UNEP Circular Economy Initiative .
Minister Kim Wan-seop said, “The oil refining industry is playing an important role by thinking hard about responding to the climate crisis,” and added, “The government will work with the industry to solve real problems and turn them into opportunities.”
This meeting also proposed the formation of a mutually beneficial consultative body for public-private cooperation. Through this, the government plans to provide customized support measures, and the oil refining industry plans to focus on strengthening a sustainable industrial structure.
Climate crisis response is not just a problem for the government and industry. It is a task that requires participation from all of society. This cooperation is an important touchstone for achieving carbon neutrality and is expected to have a positive impact on domestic and international environmental policies.
