Participation of 5 universities, competitions and presentations of excellent content… Establishment of a system for developing new local industries and nurturing talent

Gyeongsangbuk-do announced on the 5th that it held the ‘2024 Gyeongsangbuk-do-type Talent Development-Employment Linked Metaverse Academy Project Performance Sharing Meeting’ at Gumico. This event was prepared to share the results of a representative program for fostering digital talent in the metaverse new industry sector that Gyeongsangbuk-do is promoting and to strengthen the connection between talent and companies in the region.

The Metaverse Academy is a project operated in cooperation between Gyeongbuk Province and five universities (Kyungwoon University, Kumoh National Institute of Technology, Andong National University, Yeungnam University, and Handong Global University), and is fostering practical digital talents needed in the metaverse new industry. At this performance sharing session, various programs were held, such as ▲Project Competition ▲Academy Outstanding Student Awards Ceremony ▲Special Lectures by Metaverse Industry Experts ▲Exhibition Booth Experience.

The excellent works of the competition were selected, and the metaverse industry innovation ideas were presented. In the project competition, which is the main program of the performance sharing meeting, 5 excellent teams were selected as final candidates out of 35 projects conducted by each university. Among them, ▲ Andong National University’s ‘Virtual Idol Team’s K-Culture Digital Twin Virtual Idol Project and ▲ Yeungnam University’s ‘Uplift Team’s Game Industry Project were selected as the final excellent teams.

The Andong National University team received high praise for presenting original and globally competitive content that combined Korean culture (K-culture) and AI technology, while the Yeungnam National University team received favorable reviews for its sophisticated design and industrial linkage that highlighted its potential for practical application.

In addition, ideas for utilizing metaverse technology linked to various industries, such as AI psychotherapy services, wind power plant training, VR barista training, and drone pilot training, were presented, drawing the attention of attendees.

Gyeongbuk’s metaverse vision seeks to promote the mutual growth of talent and companies. The plan is to strengthen cooperation between metaverse alliance companies and trainees through performance sharing meetings. In the future, we plan to expand opportunities for trainees and companies to work together, such as holding exhibitions and conducting joint projects, to establish a virtuous cycle structure for the development of the metaverse industry and talent cultivation in the region.

Gyeongbuk Province is also working on building long-term infrastructure for fostering digital talent. Through the digital Meister High School conversion project of Uiseong Gyeongbuk Software High School (scheduled to open in March 2025) and the metaverse lab support project centered around Pohang University of Science and Technology and Kumoh National Institute of Technology, it is supporting high-level talents with master’s and doctoral degrees to contribute to local startups and economic revitalization.

Gyeongbuk’s challenge for the future, taking a leap forward as a digital center that grows together with the region. Lee Jeong-woo, director of the MetaAI Science Bureau of Gyeongsangbuk-do, said, “The future of the Republic of Korea ultimately depends on talent,” and “We will strive to establish Gyeongbuk as a center of digital and metaverse industries through practical and systematic education tailored to regional industries.”

Gyeongbuk Province plans to use this performance sharing session as an opportunity to further strengthen its talent training system to respond to changes in the digital age and lead regional and global industries.
