The Beginning and Behind the Scenes of the NORAD Santa Tracker

NORAD’s Santa Tracking is more than just fun. Its origins go back to 1955, when a misprinted newspaper ad led to children calling NORAD’s emergency number, and a colonel responded as Santa Claus to save their dreams. This special tradition began 69 years later, when NORAD has been tracking Santa’s journey in real time every Christmas Eve, receiving cheer and love from children around the world.

Santa’s Journey Captured with Cutting-Edge Technology

NORAD uses radar, satellites, and even the heat signature from Rudolph’s shiny red nose to track Santa’s movements. Santa begins his journey at the Pacific Date Line, then travels through the South Pacific, New Zealand, Australia, Asia, Africa, Europe, and across the Atlantic to North and South America. Thanks to NORAD’s sophisticated technology, kids can see Santa’s current location and where he’s headed next in real time.

A place for participation and celebration around the world

The NORAD Santa Tracker goes beyond simply showing you where Santa is. It features Christmas games, music, and stories that people from all over the world can participate in, so everyone can enjoy the festivities together. NORAD is also working with Interpreters Unlimited Inc. to provide Santa Tracking information in multiple languages, helping children around the world experience the joy of Christmas in their native language.

We hope that this Christmas, Santa’s journey will be a time of happiness and peace for everyone.

To all of you who make Christmas shine

Children still ask excitedly when Santa will come home. And NORAD volunteers keep their innocence alive with warm responses. The words, “Santa Claus comes when the children are asleep,” bring dreams and magical moments to children.

We hope that everyone will have a Merry Christmas as we follow Santa’s journey this year. We hope that this year will be filled with the laughter of children all over the world with NORAD’s Santa Tracker.
