Sejong, a hub city for autonomous driving commercialization, successfully concludes the 'Sejong Autonomous Driving Forum'

Sejong City is leaping forward as a hub city for commercializing autonomous driving. A representative event that demonstrates this was the **’2024 Chungcheong Autonomous Driving Demonstration Zone Performance Report and Sejong Autonomous Driving Forum’** held in the Sejong Techno Park conference room on the 18th, which was successfully concluded. This event was prepared as a place to share the results of the autonomous driving demonstration zone project and discuss the future of the autonomous driving industry through cooperation between Sejong Techno Park, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and Sejong City.

At the performance report meeting, specific results of the Sejong City autonomous driving pilot operation zone project were announced. Sejong Technopark Future Convergence Industry Center Director Kim Seon-gyeong announced that the Chungcheong region (Sejong and Chungbuk) autonomous driving pilot operation zone received the highest grade, Grade A (very excellent), among 24 pilot operation zones nationwide in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport evaluation. In particular, Sejong City’s autonomous BRT (Bus Rapid Transit System) technology received high evaluations, proving Chungcheong’s technological prowess and operational capabilities.

The forum that followed featured a variety of discussions on the present and future of the autonomous driving industry. Professor Kim Pil-soo of Daerim University gave a keynote speech on the topic of autonomous driving technology development and social ripple effects, and domestic autonomous driving experts, companies, and academia gathered together to have a heated panel discussion. Public officials related to autonomous driving from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, Sejong City, and Chungcheongbuk-do Province, as well as major autonomous driving companies such as Autonomous A2Z, Rideflux, and Unmanned Solution, participated in the event. Research institutes such as the Korea Transport Institute, the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, and Chungbuk National University also participated and presented diverse opinions on autonomous driving technology and policies.

The discussion concluded that Sejong City has the best conditions for introducing autonomous driving services that fill in the blind spots and time gaps of public transportation. Based on this, Sejong City requested continued support from the central government and local governments for the commercialization of autonomous driving, and proposed to actively engage in technology development and service expansion.

Sejong Technopark Director Yang Hyeon-bong said about the Chungcheong region receiving an excellent grade, “Sejong City’s autonomous driving BRT technology and service quality were highly evaluated,” and “We will continue to work to develop Sejong City into a hub city for commercializing autonomous driving.”

This forum has become an important foundation for Sejong City to grow into a hub for autonomous driving technology, and has established itself as a venue for cooperation for sustainable technological innovation and regional development. Sejong City’s steps are drawing attention as autonomous driving becomes established as a cutting-edge industry that solves regional traffic problems, improves quality of life, and enhances national competitiveness.
