Sejong City Nighttime Deputy Mayor System First Step: ‘Nighttime Culture Director’

Sejong Special Self-Governing City has taken its first step toward developing the local economy and becoming a night-time cultural city through the revitalization of night-time tourism. Sejong City has introduced the ‘Nighttime Vice Mayor’ system for the first time in Korea to systematically promote night-time tourism and strengthen citizen-centered night-time cultural events.

The nighttime deputy mayor system is a policy being implemented by global tourist cities, and has been successfully operated in London, New York, Paris, etc. This system provides flexibility to promote innovative policies outside of the existing administrative structure in order to promote nighttime tourism. On the 27th, Sejong City took its first step toward becoming a nighttime tourist city by appointing Park Young-guk, the current head of the Sejong City Culture and Tourism Foundation, as its first nighttime deputy mayor.

Park Young-guk, the representative, will serve as the general manager of ‘Night Culture’ based on his rich experience and network in the cultural tourism sector. He will be in charge of various tasks such as discovering and promoting night-time specialized projects, strengthening cooperation with related departments, and activating private participation. Through the appointment of Park, the city plans to make 2025 the first year of activating night culture in Sejong City by making full use of the capabilities of the Cultural Tourism Foundation.

In 2024, the already popular Urban Night event will be further expanded and the Coca-Cola Art Festival will be held with the participation of over 200 art groups from across the country. In addition, programs such as the downtown night camp-nic are being prepared to expand citizen participation.

Sejong City plans to actively accept creative ideas from the private sector based on the nighttime vice mayor system and discover various nighttime tourism contents through communication with citizens. Through this, it aims to create real effects in the local economy by overcoming the limitations of the existing administrative system.

Sejong City Mayor Choi Min-ho said of the appointment of the night vice mayor, “This is a strategic choice to systematically activate night tourism in Sejong City.” He added, “This system will revitalize the local economy and make Sejong City a true night tourism city that people from all over the country can visit and enjoy.”

Through this system, Sejong City has strengthened its city brand and laid the foundation for establishing itself as an international night-time tourism city beyond the domestic market.
