The breath of a city comes alive in its people. In it, a place to live and pride in the region are created, and the future of the city is drawn. Seongdong-gu in Seoul is a model of such a city. Seongdong-gu proudly won two awards in the evaluation hosted by the Urban Regeneration Cooperation Forum, winning the ‘Urban Economic Policy Award’ and the ‘Sustainable Policy Award.’

Seongdong-gu has served as a bridge connecting the past and the future. Since Seongsu was selected as a Seoul-type urban regeneration project site in 2014, the industrial area of Seongsu-dong has been reborn as a vibrant mecca of culture and entrepreneurship. Old alleys have been transformed into stages of art and creativity, and the laughter of residents has become the new rhythm of this city. In addition, urban regeneration projects actively promoted in various areas such as Songjeong, Yongdap, and Sagun have made Seongdong-gu the city with the most urban regeneration projects in Seoul.

The Urban Regeneration Coordination Forum is an organization that presents the value and direction of urban regeneration and supports field-centered policies. Since its launch in 2018, it has evaluated and awarded local governments every year, and the 2024 awards ceremony will be held in February 2025. This year, 22 local governments were selected, and the only local governments that won two categories are Seongdong-gu, Seoul and Uiryeong-gun, Gyeongnam.

In particular, this award shows that Seongdong-gu is realizing the value of true urban regeneration that goes beyond mere external changes and takes into account the economy, environment, and even the quality of life of residents.

Seongdong-gu Mayor Jeongwon Oh said, Many local governments are working hard to achieve sustainable urban development , and I am delighted that our district has won two awards ,” and added , “ Seongdong-gu will continue to work with local residents to create a sustainable and coexisting city.
