Seoul Dongdaemun-gu ( District Mayor Lee Pil-hyung ) received an award of excellence for the Dongdaemun-gu Dementia Care Center’s performance in the ‘2024 Dementia Management Project Performance Evaluation Competition ‘ hosted by Seoul Metropolitan Government . Dongdaemun-gu is improving the quality of life of its residents through various dementia prevention and management projects .

Since 2008 , Dongdaemun-gu has been operating a Dementia Care Center and has established a systematic and effective management system including early dementia screening , public guardians for dementia ( a system that legally protects and supports dementia patients ), and support for dementia treatment costs . Through this, an environment is being created where dementia patients and their families can live with peace of mind in their daily lives .
Dongdaemun-gu has recently been attracting attention by introducing cutting-edge technology to dementia management projects . It received high praise for operating a cognitive / exercise program that improves dementia patients’ cognitive abilities and physical balance by utilizing **’ smart mirror ‘** that applies artificial intelligence (AI) technology .
The smart mirror is a full-length mirror-shaped device that consists of a sensor camera that recognizes movement and a walking pad that measures foot pressure . Users look at themselves in the mirror and follow stretching or exercise movements , and the smart mirror analyzes this to correct posture and provide correct feedback . Through this, patients can correct their body balance and naturally stimulate cognitive functions .
Dongdaemun-gu has designated four districts in the district as **’ Dementia-Friendly Villages ‘** to help residents prevent and manage dementia in their daily lives . Dementia-Friendly Villages are a project that provides dementia prevention education and experience programs in an environment easily accessible to residents .
In addition to the currently operating Dementia Care Village, the district plans to designate Yongsin-dong as an additional village in 2025. Through this, the district plans to support more residents to benefit from dementia prevention .
Dongdaemun-gu District Mayor Lee Pil-hyung said , “ I am very happy that the dementia management project for residents has received good reviews ,” and “ I will do my best to create a dementia-friendly environment where both dementia patients and their families can be happy . ”
This award of excellence is the result of Dongdaemun-gu’s continuous and systematic dementia management policy . Dongdaemun-gu’s dementia management project, which combines innovative programs that incorporate AI technology and a regional preventive education system, is expected to develop further in the future .
