Songpa-gu (Mayor Seo Kang-seok) announced that it won the Prime Minister’s Award at the ‘2024 Safety Culture Awards’ hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and secured 150 million won in special grants. The significance is even greater as only three local governments nationwide have received this government award.
The ‘Safety Culture Award’ is a system that rewards organizations, groups, and individuals who have contributed to spreading a safety culture. Songpa-gu was highly evaluated for establishing a safety environment in various ways, such as customized safety education, public-private cooperation safety culture movement, and disaster response training, with the goal of becoming a ’24-hour safe city.’
▲Customized safety education, improving practical safety awareness
Songpa-gu received particularly high marks for customized safety education. It produced and distributed a ‘Children’s Safety Diary’ for children and operated a ‘Children’s Safety Experience Camp’ at 20 elementary schools in the district, which received a great response.
In addition, ‘on-site safety education’ was conducted for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, the disabled, and multicultural families, and a project to renovate old facilities was implemented for 1,000 households. In addition, education to raise safety awareness was continuously provided through various experience programs at the Songpa Safety Experience Education Center.
▲ Spreading safety culture through public-private cooperation
Public-private cooperation activities were also notable. Songpa-gu established an institutional foundation for safety-related private organizations such as the National Security Council, autonomous security forces, and volunteer fire brigades to actively operate. The safety net was further strengthened through the enactment and revision of ordinances, strengthening of the cooperative system with related organizations, and signing of business agreements.
▲Strengthening practical response through training and inspection
The ‘Safe Korea Training’ held at Korea National Sport University last October was also successfully carried out. This training, in which about 500 people participated, presented timely disaster response training with the theme of ‘electric vehicle and electric kickboard fire’. It was evaluated as an example of further strengthening the cooperation system between related organizations.
▲Strengthening financial support by securing special grants
With this Prime Minister’s Award, Songpa-gu secured 150 million won in special grants from the Ministry of Public Administration and Security. This budget will be used to cover unexpected financial needs in the future and for various projects to strengthen the local safety net.
Songpa-gu District Mayor Seo Kang-seok said, “This award is a valuable result of the efforts of public officials and 660,000 residents to raise safety awareness,” and added, “We will continue to do our best to create a safe urban environment 24 hours a day so that residents can live with peace of mind.”
Songpa-gu plans to use this award as an opportunity to continue to strengthen safety education, expand public-private cooperation, and enhance disaster response capabilities to create a ‘24-hour safe city, Songpa.’
