The Ministry of the Interior and Safety established the ‘Local Public Institution Innovation Guidelines’ in September 2022 to improve the poor and wasteful management of local public institutions and enhance the quality of public services. In addition, it is expanding structural reform by providing financial incentives to excellent local governments that have created innovation results early.

Since last year, Uijeongbu City has been actively promoting the consolidation of public institutions with similar and overlapping functions in order to provide high-quality public services and strengthen financial soundness. As a result of these efforts, it has achieved the feat of being selected as the best local government among 101 basic local governments nationwide.

Mayor Kim Dong-geun said, “Restructuring public institutions is essential to increasing management efficiency, strengthening financial soundness, and creating changes that citizens can feel,” and added, “We will continue to improve the quality of citizens’ lives and further enhance the quality of public services through continuous innovation.”

Currently, Uijeongbu City has completed the revision of the ordinance for the merger of four public institutions, and plans to complete the merger process by April 2024 and accelerate public service innovation based on it.
