Currently, the shipbuilding industry still has many processes that rely on manual labor, and the need for the introduction of automation technology has been raised continuously. This project is expected to realize efficient shipbuilding through an intelligent autonomous manufacturing system and create an environment where people and robots can collaborate.
An Ulsan official said, “This project is an opportunity for Ulsan’s shipbuilding industry to take a leap forward,” and “It will serve as a stepping stone to strengthen the technological capabilities of local small and medium-sized enterprises and establish Ulsan as a center for artificial intelligence and autonomous manufacturing technology.”
An HD Hyundai Mipo Shipbuilding official emphasized, “The competitiveness of the shipbuilding industry depends on innovative technology,” and “We will apply collaborative robots and artificial intelligence technology to the field to increase process efficiency and gain an advantage in the global market.” Through this project, the company plans to achieve two goals simultaneously: shortening process times and reducing costs.
Technological innovation is expected to lead to significant changes across the shipbuilding industry. The establishment of an autonomous manufacturing system is expected to improve worker safety, promote local economic activation, and further strengthen the global competitiveness of the shipbuilding industry.
In particular, Ulsan City plans to promote technology sharing with small and medium-sized enterprises and partners through the spread of artificial intelligence and autonomous manufacturing technology. In addition, it plans to focus on promoting sustainable growth in the shipbuilding industry based on efficiency.
Ulsan Metropolitan City plans to continue to spare no effort in investing in and supporting advanced technology research and development (R&D) in the region. This project will serve as a model for how the convergence of artificial intelligence technology and the shipbuilding industry can lead to tangible economic results.
