Yangcheon-gu (District Mayor Lee Ki-jae) announced that it will install and operate the ‘Disabled-only Parking Area Smart Guardian’, an unmanned, permanent parking enforcement system, in 100 parking lots in 22 public facilities and apartment complexes this year to promote the convenience of movement and parking for the disabled and prevent illegal parking in disabled-only parking areas.

‘Disabled-only parking area smart sensor (smart guardian)’ is a real-time management system for disabled-only parking areas that utilizes Internet of Things (IoT) technology. It guides drivers to exit the area on their own by notifying them of illegal parking.

This system automatically recognizes the license plate number of a vehicle entering a disabled parking space using an Internet of Things (IoT) detector (sensor), and prevents illegal parking by sounding a warning light and broadcasting a warning message when a non-disabled vehicle enters. In addition, if parking is forced even after a certain period of time has passed, immediate fines can be imposed by checking the photo and parking record of the violator.

This has the effect of preventing illegal parking in disabled parking spaces in advance and securing disabled parking spaces at all times, and it is evaluated as highly effective in crackdowns as it allows for quick processing of fines for violating vehicles. Last year, out of 13,149 non-disabled vehicles that received warnings from smart sensors, 13,047 vehicles (99.2%) voluntarily turned around.

Yangcheon-gu District Mayor Lee Ki-jae said, “We are contributing to the realization of a proper parking culture by always securing parking spaces for the disabled through smart sensors and effectively preventing illegal parking,” adding, “We will continue to make efforts to effectively utilize smart infrastructure to improve illegal parking and enhance the welfare of the disabled.”
