Yangcheon-gu (District Mayor Lee Ki-jae) announced that it will carry out winter mosquito larvae control work targeting 100 locations including complex buildings, apartments, markets, and water reservoirs to effectively reduce the number of mosquitoes in the summer by eliminating winter mosquitoes and larvae that live in septic tanks and underground spaces of buildings.

Winter mosquito larvae control is a low-cost way to reduce mosquito outbreaks in advance. When one winter mosquito larva is controlled, it can have the effect of controlling more than 500 summer mosquitoes. In particular, due to global warming, rising temperatures and improved heating conditions, winter mosquitoes that hide and breed in the basements of buildings are increasingly active in early spring, making winter mosquito control even more important.
Accordingly, the district will conduct intensive quarantine by deploying the quarantine mobile team of the public health center to 100 large buildings with more than 200 septic tanks and sumps, such as apartments and complex buildings. The winter mosquito larva extermination work is scheduled to operate until March of next year. The quarantine mobile team will visit the target facilities in person to determine whether mosquito larvae are inhabiting them and administer larval extermination chemicals to underground spaces, septic tanks, sumps, etc. where many adult mosquitoes and larvae are found. After administering the chemicals, education on mosquito larva extermination methods will be provided to building managers to enable continuous management.
In addition, the district is requesting cooperation in winter mosquito control for 791 facilities subject to mandatory disinfection. We plan to actively inform facilities that require regular disinfection, such as schools, accommodations, and apartment complexes with 300 or more households, of the need for winter mosquito control, and to ensure that mosquito control is carried out together with regular disinfection.
Meanwhile, in addition to quarantine and disinfection activities, the district is also monitoring mosquito outbreaks and pathogens in mosquitoes by collecting mosquito-attracting lights, as well as making multifaceted efforts to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne infectious diseases, such as voluntary prevention practices by residents through the 98-member Village Love Quarantine Volunteer Group and installing eco-friendly pest exterminators in areas with a lot of floating population.
Yangcheon-gu District Mayor Lee Ki-jae said, “Unlike summer mosquito control, winter control is more effective and efficient because it focuses on specific areas that are suitable for mosquito growth conditions.” He added, “We will do our best to ensure that residents can have a pleasant summer through concentrated winter mosquito larvae control.”
