Yongin Special City announced on the 3rd that it signed a business agreement for ‘late-night signboard lights-out’ with three district branches of the Korea Real Estate Brokers Association, the first of its kind in the country. This agreement is the first step toward achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, and aims to reduce carbon emissions by 2,953 tons annually by having 2,173 real estate brokerage firms voluntarily participate in turning off their signs.

This agreement was made with the purpose of reducing unnecessary power waste from outdoor advertisements after business hours and participating in energy conservation. The agreement ceremony was held in the mayor’s reception room at Yongin Special City Hall with 10 people in attendance, including Yongin Special City Mayor Lee Sang-il, Korea Real Estate Association’s Cheoin Branch President Ryu Gi-chan, Giheung Branch President Song Yeong-o, and Suji Branch President Jeong Sang-rak.

Mayor Lee Sang-il said at the signing ceremony, “I am delighted to be the first in the country to sign a meaningful agreement with the Association of Real Estate Brokers for carbon neutrality.” He continued, “By turning off the signs, we can expect great results such as saving 6,966MW of electricity annually, saving about 1.2 billion won in electricity bills, and reducing carbon emissions by 2,953 tons.” He added, “I hope that today’s agreement will be an opportunity to take Yongin’s carbon neutrality practices one step further, and I hope that this campaign will spread to other cities.”

According to the agreement, the city and the three district branches of the Korea Association of Certified Real Estate Brokers will voluntarily shorten the time when real estate brokerage offices turn off their signs by five hours a day and actively promote the carbon neutrality campaign.

Currently, there are a total of 2,173 certified real estate agent offices in operation in Yongin Special City, and these offices use an average of two outdoor advertisements, including wall signs, entrance signs, and indoor lighting. The existing advertisement operation hours were from 6 AM to 12 AM, but according to the agreement, this will be adjusted to 8 AM to 9 PM, reducing the hours by five hours per day.

This is expected to reduce annual power consumption by 6,966MW and save about 1.2 billion won in electricity bills. In addition, the effect of reducing carbon emissions by 2,953 tons is equivalent to planting 300,000 25-year-old pine trees.

The city plans to guide real estate agencies participating in this campaign to receive incentives of up to 80,000 won per year through the Ministry of Environment’s carbon neutrality point system. Through this, it plans to encourage participation by real estate agencies and raise awareness among citizens.

Ryu Ki-chan, the chairman of the association, said, “This signboard lights-out campaign is not for anyone else, but something we must do for our future selves,” adding, “I am glad that the association is leading the way in practicing carbon neutrality.”

Meanwhile, the three district branches of the Korea Real Estate Agents Association are actively participating in year-end and New Year’s community sharing activities in addition to this agreement. Last December, the Cheoin branch donated 11.24 million won, the Giheung branch donated 233 boxes of ramen worth 5.34 million won, and the Suji branch donated shoulder massagers worth 8.5 million won, sharing warmth with needy neighbors in the community.

Mayor Lee Sang-il said, “The Real Estate Brokers Association is setting an example for the local community by not only turning off signs late at night but also taking the lead in sharing activities,” adding, “The city will also actively support the practice of carbon neutrality and the spread of a culture of sharing.”
