Yongin Special City (Mayor Lee Sang-il) announced that it held the ‘2024 Youth Environmental Policy Proposal Forum’ at the Cultural Arts Center International Conference Room on the 21st. This forum, now in its third year, was planned by the Yongin Office of Education and the Yongin Environmental Education Teachers’ Research Association, and was prepared as part of ecological transition education where youth can think about climate crises and local environmental issues together and seek solutions.

About 40 youth from the Yongin area participated in the forum, and through two prior activities, they held in-depth discussions on the following topics: ▲ecological environment ▲waste ▲energy ▲resource circulation ▲recycling ▲environmental education ▲environmental practice.

At the forum that day, teachers from the Yongin Environmental Education Teachers Research Association served as facilitators and led discussions to provide direction so that students’ creative ideas could develop into practical policies. The teachers actively supported students by helping them collect data and conduct in-depth research so that they could propose effective ideas.

The highlight of the forum was the environmental policy proposal presentation. Students gave keynote speeches, discussed policy proposals by division, and presented policies on the topic of “Climate Crisis Response and Carbon Neutrality Practices We Create,” and explained the ideas they had discovered in detail.

The participating youth presented a variety of ideas, including carbon neutrality implementation plans, waste reduction policies, and energy conservation campaigns, and showed the potential for these ideas to be reflected in policies to solve local environmental problems.

City officials said, “It is very encouraging that young people, who are the future generation’s leaders, are taking interest in local environmental issues and proposing various policy ideas,” and added, “We will spare no support to ensure that their ideas can be reflected in actual policies.”

Yongin Special City plans to expand youth participation in solving environmental problems and continue policy efforts to respond to the climate crisis.
