This measure was focused on facilities frequently used by vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.

Yongin Special City has strengthened its measures to protect vulnerable groups by installing window-type ventilation purifiers and fine dust smart poles in areas designated as fine dust intensive management zones, such as Pungdeokcheon 2-dong, Suji-gu and Singal-dong, Giheung-gu.

The city has moved away from the installation of reduction facilities centered on existing public institutions and expanded this to include private daycare centers and senior centers, installing 31 window-type ventilation purifiers in a total of 10 locations. The installed ventilation purifiers are designed to filter out fine dust, yellow dust, and internal harmful substances, and provide ventilation without having to open windows even when high concentrations of fine dust occur, thereby maintaining a pleasant indoor environment.

In addition, a fine dust smart pole was installed in Sinjeong Park, Pungdeokcheon 2-dong, Suji-gu. This device is 3.5m high and can visually check the real-time fine dust concentration, and the top light changes to blue, green, yellow, and red depending on the fine dust condition, making it easy to check the current concentration from afar.

The fine dust intensive management area is designated according to the ‘Special Act on Fine Dust Reduction and Management’ and is selected through consultation with the Ministry of Environment in areas where children and elderly people use facilities in large numbers. The area is monitored for fine dust concentration at all times and receives intensive management such as the deployment of water trucks when high concentrations occur.

Yongin Special City is expanding the management target by additionally designating Pungdeokcheon 2-dong as a fine dust intensive management area in 2020, Singal-dong in 2022, and Baekam-myeon Baekam and Geunchang-ri in 2023.

City officials emphasized, “This measure is to protect citizens’ health in preparation for the season when fine dust is likely to become severe,” and “We will continue to install additional fine dust reduction facilities in the future to provide citizens with a pleasant environment.”
