Goyang Special City (Mayor Lee Dong-hwan) held a wish event on the 15th at Goyang Sports Complex to wish for Goyang City to co-host the 2036 Seoul Olympics. Approximately 50 athletes and coaches from Goyang Special City’s corporate sports teams, including Mayor Lee Dong-hwan, attended the event and presented a bid performance.
On this day, the participants held banners and pickets with the wish for Seoul to host the Olympics and performed with one voice, showing their strong will to host the Olympics. The participants agreed that hosting the Olympics would be an opportunity to solidify Goyang City’s image as a sports city and greatly enhance the local economy and brand value.
Goyang Special City Mayor Lee Dong-hwan emphasized at the event, “Goyang is not simply a satellite city of Seoul, but a network city that grows together with Seoul.” He continued, “Goyang is a city with the best sports infrastructure in the country, including Goyang Gymnasium, Goyang Sports Complex, and Eoullim Nuri. If Seoul and Goyang cooperate to host the Olympics, it will have positive ripple effects not only on the local community but also on the national level.”
The event was more meaningful with the attendance of weightlifter Park Hye-jeong, who won a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Park Hye-jeong said, “As an athlete, I sincerely hope that the Olympics will be held in my hometown of Goyang,” and “If it is held, I will do my best to enhance the image of Goyang as a sports city.”
Goyang Special City plans to use this event as an opportunity to inform the local community of the need to host the Olympics and continue to create a hosting boom through various promotional activities in which corporate sports teams and citizens participate together.
In particular, Goyang City is already equipped with sports infrastructure such as Goyang Gymnasium, Goyang Sports Complex, and Eoullim Nuri, and is evaluated as a city with facilities suitable for hosting the Olympic Games. In addition, the city plans to further spread the enthusiasm for hosting the Olympic Games through talent donation activities and participation in various competitions targeting citizens.
Mayor Lee Dong-hwan said, “Hosting the Olympics will be more than just a sports event; it will be a new opportunity for local community and economic development,” adding, “Through cooperation connecting Seoul and Goyang, we will make a leap forward as a sports city that attracts the attention of people around the world.”
