Goyang Special City (Mayor Lee Dong-hwan) held the ‘First Communication and Empathy Day of 2025’ at the Goyang Special City Hall Arts Center at 10 am on the 15th, and shared the city’s direction and vision for the new year. At the event, Mayor Lee Dong-hwan presented job creation and city rebranding as key strategies for this year, emphasizing Goyang City’s new leap forward.
Mayor Lee Dong-hwan said, “We will drastically revamp the city brand to become a ‘dynamic and desirable city, a fun city’ with the goal of creating 300,000 jobs by 2030,” adding, “Ultimately, we will become a ‘game changer’ that presents a new urban model for the Republic of Korea.”
He also mentioned the achievement of Goyang Special City winning 77 institutional awards in various fields such as municipal innovation, urban development, and welfare in 2024, and evaluated it as “the fruit of the efforts of citizens and public officials.” He continued, “We will actively utilize generative artificial intelligence (AI) such as ChatGPT in policies to improve citizen services and increase administrative efficiency.”
At the event, Goyang City’s major municipal achievements and plans were also shared. The selection of the Gongneungcheon public offering project, the opening of the Greater Seoul Area Express Railway (GTX-A), the resumption of the suburban line, and the attraction of the Free Economic Zone were introduced as major achievements, and it was emphasized that Goyang City will spur sustainable development based on these.
After the event, Professor Sang-Wook Kim of Kyung Hee University gave a special guest lecture. Professor Kim explained the lessons physics can teach us about the universe and humans under the topic, “What Physics Can Tell Us About the Universe and Humans,” and received a great response from the attendees.
Professor Kim said, “The background of humans giving meaning to numbers started in the sky (天),” and explained that the number ‘7’ originated from celestial bodies that can be observed with the naked eye, such as the sun, moon, and Mercury, Venus, and Mars. He also added that these numbers influenced the oriental theory of yin-yang and the five elements and the names of the days of the week.
He continued, “The universe is infinite, and the Earth is just a small rock orbiting the sun,” and emphasized, “We are miraculous beings that last only a moment, and it is not right to hate and fight others.” Professor Kim also pointed out that science cannot perfectly predict the future, explaining that scientists did not know at the time that the invention of plastic and the internal combustion engine would lead to a climate crisis.
At the end of the lecture, he emphasized the importance of teaching children living in an era of change the unchanging essence, and emphasized the need for education that fosters academic knowledge in history, philosophy, logic, art, mathematics, and science.
The event ended as a meaningful opportunity to share Goyang City’s vision, discuss city administration goals with employees, and take the first step into the new year.
