Jongno-gu announced that it will be promoting the “2025 Beautiful Signboard Street Creation Project” from this month to October to improve the cityscape and revitalize local businesses. The main purpose of this project is to reorganize old or illegally installed signboards and replace them with simple and organized Korean-centered LED signboards.

The business target area and local support business operator will be solicited until January 27th, and applications will be processed by submitting the required documents to the local community center. The target area includes areas where livelihood-type commercial districts are concentrated, major tourist destinations, densely populated areas with a large floating population, and areas with significant development effects. In particular, priority will be given to areas with new applications.

Local government subsidy business operators can apply as representatives of a resident council consisting of 5 to 10 members, including local residents or business owners. When applying, consent from at least 30% of the businesses in the area must be obtained, and the public contest selection will proceed through the Outdoor Advertisement Review Committee review and public notice procedures. Businesses selected through the public contest can receive up to 3 million won per business for signage improvement costs.

Meanwhile, Jongno-gu has been steadily carrying out the project to create streets with beautiful signs since 2008, starting with Daehak-ro, Samcheong-dong-gil, Sejong-ro, Naksan-gil, Bukchon-ro, and Donhwamun-ro. Last year, it received a great response through cooperation with residents by cleaning up 57 illegally installed signs in the Changsin 1-dong and Buam-dong areas.

Buam-dong changed its existing English signs to Korean signs to bring out the local characteristics, and Changsin 1-dong stood out for improving the image of the stationery and toy street by utilizing various colors and characters.

Jongno-gu District Mayor Jeong Moon-heon said, “We will continue to promote the signboard project that will create a pleasant and beautiful Jongno street and inject vitality into the local commercial district,” and added, “I hope for the interest and participation of many residents and business owners.”
