Jongno-gu has set out to create a safe and pleasant urban environment through the Urban Clearing Project, which reorganizes unnecessary or outdated urban facilities. Urban Clearing is a project to organize urban spaces through the demolition, consolidation, maintenance, and minimization of new installations of facilities. Jongno-gu, which has recorded 46,801 cases of maintenance by the end of 2024, plans to continue to promote rust removal, facility inspection, and urban landscape improvement projects this year.

Jongno-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeong Moon-heon) is promoting the “Urban Clearing Project” throughout the year to efficiently utilize urban space and create a safe pedestrian environment. This project is carried out by demolishing unnecessary or dysfunctional urban facilities, merging facilities with similar functions, and maintaining and repairing old and corroded facilities.

Jongno-gu has completed a total of 46,801 maintenance projects by December 2024 since it began its urban cleanup project in 2013. In detail, this includes facility demolition (6,459 cases), consolidation (326 cases), and organization (40,016 cases). In addition, the scope of environmental maintenance has been expanded by adding a rust removal project since 2020.

Last year, through the Urban Emptying Working Group, we minimized the installation of new facilities, while carrying out detailed maintenance work such as removing rust from traffic lights and road facilities and painting facilities damaged by graffiti.

From 2023, we will conduct regular and ad hoc reviews in parallel to strengthen the flexibility and substance of the project. This year, we plan to demolish or relocate facilities that hinder pedestrian safety or have lost their function, and conduct intensive inspections of the rust and corrosion status of the facilities in May and October. Then, from July to December, we will conduct comprehensive maintenance, including rust removal and painting, targeting major streets.

In addition, various landscape improvement projects, such as improving the scenery of the Cheong Wa Dae-Baekak walking tour course, maintaining aerial cables, and creating streets with beautiful signs, will be promoted in conjunction with urban clearing.

Jongno-gu District Mayor Jeong Moon-heon said, “Through the urban emptying project, we aim to create a safer and more pleasant urban environment based on the know-how accumulated over a long period of time,” and added, “We will empty, reduce, and organize to create a Jongno that satisfies both residents and tourists.”
