Mayor Lee Sang-il of Yongin Special City visited Washington, D.C., USA, to visit the Korean War Veterans Memorial, pay tribute, and pay tribute to the veterans who sacrificed themselves for freedom and democracy. The memorial was unveiled on July 27, 1995 to commemorate the sacrifice of 36,634 American soldiers who gave their lives in the Korean War and 8,177 who went missing.

The walls of the monument are engraved with the images of the soldiers who fought in the war, and on one side of the monument is the phrase, “Freedom is not free.” Mayor Lee Sang-il mentioned this phrase and said, “I remember the noble intentions of those who sacrificed themselves to protect the freedom and democracy of the Republic of Korea, and I thank them for their devotion.”

He continued, “The freedom we enjoy today was possible thanks to the valuable sacrifices of the victims of the past,” and “Yongin Special City will continue to spare no support for the families of veterans and those with national merit.”

This market is a former correspondent for JoongAng Ilbo who lived in Fairfax County and visited the Korean War Memorial several times while stationed in the United States. He gave lectures on the tragedy of the Korean War and the pain of separated families, emphasizing the importance of security.

During this visit to Washington, D.C., the mayor toured the U.S. Capitol and the Library of Congress in addition to the Korean War Memorial. The U.S. Capitol is a symbolic location where presidential inaugurations are held, and inside, there is a ceiling painting depicting the deification of George Washington, the first president of the United States, as well as sculptures and paintings depicting major aspects of American history.

The Library of Congress is the world’s largest library, housing approximately 33 million books in 470 languages. The mayor listened to explanations from library officials about the process of managing the world’s collections and operating the facilities, reaffirming the importance of culture and knowledge.

On the 12th, local time, Mayor Lee met with Ambassador Cho Hyun-dong of the Republic of Korea to the United States and discussed ways to promote exchanges between Yongin Special City and U.S. cities. In particular, he focused on strengthening exchanges with Williamson County, Texas, with which the city already has a sister city relationship, and expanding networks with more U.S. cities, including friendly cooperation with Fairfax County.

In addition, they exchanged opinions on the foreign and economic policies of the US Donald Trump administration, which will be launched on January 20, and discussed exchange strategies in response to changes in the international situation. The mayor expressed his will to expand international cooperation, saying, “Through exchanges with US cities, we will promote Yongin’s cutting-edge industries and culture and strengthen our global network.”
