Incheon City’s Namdong-gu announced on the 8th that it is promoting a project to create a safe school route in front of schools to ensure pedestrian safety for students and other vulnerable road users .
The district recently separated the roadway and sidewalk and installed safety railings in the sections of sidewalks that were disconnected around the main gates of Eunbong Elementary School and Seochang Middle School, which had a high risk of accidents .
Eunbong Elementary School was disconnected from the school gate to the Nonhyeon-ro intersection , and Seochang Middle School was disconnected from the school gate to Seochang District 2 .

In particular , the road width in that section is narrow and there are commercial and residential areas along the road, making it difficult to expand pedestrian space , so pedestrians and vehicles travel without distinction between the sidewalk and the roadway .
In order to prevent traffic accidents, the city adjusted the width of the lanes on the back roads to secure separate pedestrian space and installed safety railings to separate the roadway and sidewalk so that pedestrians can walk with confidence .
|
Additionally , visibility was improved by changing the color and paving material of the pedestrian-only road .
As pedestrian accidents involving vulnerable road users mostly occur on back roads where the sidewalk and roadway are not separated, the city plans to expand projects to install sidewalks with different heights from the roadway or separate the space from the roadway with safety railings to prevent accidents .

Mayor Park Jong-hyo said, “ We will do our best to create a safe pedestrian environment by focusing on roads where pedestrians and vehicles coexist, so that vulnerable road users can walk conveniently and safely. ” He added, “ I also ask drivers to pay close attention so that our children can walk safely . ”
