Sejong Special Self-Governing City (Mayor Choi Min-ho) announced that it will operate the ‘Local Culture Recorder’ project promoted by the Korea Senior Human Resources Development Institute in cooperation with the Sejong Senior Club starting this year. This project is part of the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s ‘Elderly Employment and Social Activity Support Project’ and aims to preserve local culture by having citizens directly record Sejong’s history, culture, places, and life history.

Sejong City’s ‘Local Cultural Recorder’ project is carried out in a way that local residents directly participate in order to discover and preserve hidden stories of the region. In particular, each village in Sejong City is visited and various records are left covering not only the history, culture, and art of the region, but also daily life and spontaneous community activities.

This year, eight senior citizens over the age of 60 were selected and are currently working on the project. Based on their experiences spanning the past and present, they are covering and documenting various aspects of Sejong, and the recorded data will be made public through the village record culture center and the online website ‘Dadam (多談)’. These records can be viewed by any citizen at any time and place, and some will also be exhibited offline.

The village record culture center located at 20 Naesong-gil, Yeondong-myeon, Sejong City will be used as the central base for this project. During the project period of approximately 10 months, the center will not only collect and manage records, but also enrich the local memory through donations of records from citizens and reports of potential record storage locations.

Jong-su Ahn, the head of the Autonomous Administration Division, said, “The local cultural record project is meaningful in that local residents themselves are recording the history and culture of their region,” and emphasized, “Recording the rapid urban changes and historical flow of Sejong City will be a great legacy for the next generation.”

Sejong citizens can make donations or reports through the Village Record Culture Center (☎044-862-8807) or the Autonomous Administration Division (☎044-300-3155). Local cultural recorders plan to leave more abundant records based on this participation of citizens.
