Yongin Special City Signs Friendship Agreement with Fairfax County, USA… Expanding Advanced Industry and Cultural Exchanges

Yongin Special City (Mayor Lee Sang-il) announced on January 13 (local time) that it signed a friendship agreement with Fairfax County, Virginia, USA. This agreement is intended to strengthen exchanges between cutting-edge industries, culture, education, and companies, and Yongin and Fairfax County promised cooperation centered on future industries such as semiconductors, aerospace, and quantum mechanics.

Yongin Special City has opened a new chapter in international exchange by signing a friendship agreement with Fairfax County, Virginia, USA. This agreement, signed on January 13, was more meaningful as it was made on the same day as the 20th anniversary of ‘Korean American Day’.

The signing ceremony held at the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority on this day was attended by key officials from both sides, including Yongin Mayor Lee Sang-il, Fairfax County Chairman Jeffrey McKay, and Economic Development Authority Director Victor Hoskins.

Mayor Lee Sang-il said, “Yongin, the center of the semiconductor industry, and Fairfax County, known as the Eastern Silicon Valley, are cities centered on cutting-edge industries and have much in common,” adding, “I hope that this friendship agreement will serve as an opportunity for various exchanges encompassing businesses, universities, and culture.”

“The collaboration with Yongin, which is growing innovatively, will bring great results to both cities,” said Fairfax County Commissioner Jeffrey McKay. “We will continue to build a win-win relationship through continued information exchange and communication.”

Through this agreement, the two cities promised to ▲ visit local government delegations, ▲ invite universities to exchange and admission information sessions, ▲ strengthen export consultations and cooperation between companies, ▲ promote exchanges and performances between cultural and artistic organizations, and ▲ cooperate to revitalize tourism.

In particular, Fairfax County expressed anticipation for the ‘Quantum Mechanics Industry Conference’ scheduled to be held in September and the ‘Aerospace Conference’ to be held in November, and hoped that companies in Yongin would actively participate and expand the exchange of cutting-edge technologies.

“Fairfax County is a hub for cutting-edge industries such as aerospace, semiconductors, quantum mechanics, and cybersecurity, and our collaboration with Yongin will create mutual synergy,” said Victor Hoskins, Commissioner of the Economic Development Authority. “We will actively support Yongin’s companies and research institutes to succeed in the U.S. market.”

Mayor Lee Sang-il said that he will consider introducing Fairfax County’s corporate support program and network environment to Yongin through this friendship agreement. He also plans to support Yongin companies to actively participate in international conferences held in Fairfax County.

The mayor emphasized, “Fairfax County and Yongin have great potential for exchange based on their common interests of ‘innovation’ and ‘cutting-edge industry,’” and “This agreement will be an important turning point for the development of both cities.”

Fairfax County is a representative high-tech industrial area in the eastern United States, with over 10,000 high-tech companies and over 170,000 related workers. In particular, various high-tech industries such as quantum mechanics, aerospace, semiconductors, and cybersecurity are concentrated, and the environment that allows for the establishment of a global network through two international airports is considered a strength.

Additionally, Fairfax County is home to the third-largest Korean population in the United States, and is home to over 70 Korean companies, including Hanwha Aerospace, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), and Golfzon, providing favorable conditions for economic and cultural exchanges with Korea.
