Goyang City Ilsan Integrated Social Welfare Center (Director Choi Chan-young) announced that it successfully completed the ‘Run Snail School (hereinafter referred to as Dal Dal School)’, a slow learner support program conducted as part of the Samsung Dream Scholarship Foundation’s Learning Center Education Support Project, in December 2024.

Dal Dal School was operated for children who are slow learners and lack educational resources due to socioeconomic reasons, and carried out various activities with the goal of improving the school adaptability and self-efficacy of children in grades 2 to 5 of elementary school.

Main Program

Dal Dal School is comprised of the following programs tailored to the level of slow learners: △Basic/Solid/Master (math learning), △Dal Dal Playground (music/game group activities), △Math Camp, △Self-governing council, and △Volunteering activities.

In particular, the mathematics learning program is designed to help students develop their skills from basic to applied mathematics in a way that is suitable for slow learners. It is designed to foster social skills through play and group activities, and to experience proactive and responsible activities through self-governing councils and volunteer activities.

Volunteering and improving self-efficacy

The most distinctive feature of Daldal School is the volunteer work that connects what they have learned to practice. In the first half of the year, they operated a ‘math quiz booth’ where they introduced math games (ice number breaker, card addition and subtraction games, etc.) that slow learners had planned themselves to their peers and gave them prizes.

In the second half of the year, we produced a ‘math calendar’ with math as the theme and distributed it to the users of the welfare center. In the process, the children were able to share what they learned and feel a sense of growth and accomplishment through volunteer work.

Participants’ comments

A slow learner child who participated in the program expressed confidence, saying, “I am happy that I am good at math thanks to Daldal School.” The guardian also expressed gratitude, saying, “I was worried because my child often gave up on previous academies, but Daldal School progressed at a pace that suited my child’s pace, so he was able to finish it. I think my child grew the most through volunteer work.”

Community interest and support

Daldal School is significant in that it does not simply provide learning support, but also provides opportunities for slow learners to take initiative and build self-confidence. Goyang City Ilsan Integrated Social Welfare Center plans to continue providing various support projects for children who lack educational resources.

Director Choi Chan-young said, “I am glad that children who are slow learners have improved their academic achievements and self-efficacy through Dal Dal School, and have grown to the next level through experiences they share with their neighbors,” and added, “We will continue to operate various programs to help children grow in the future.”
