Jung-gu, Seoul (Mayor Gil-seong Kim) announced that it will operate a systematic smoking cessation support program through the Jung-gu Public Health Center’s smoking cessation clinic to help Jung-gu residents who have resolved to quit smoking in the new year successfully quit.

According to statistics, the success rate of quitting smoking through one’s own will is only 3-7%. However, if you receive help such as medication, smoking cessation aids, and professional counseling, the success rate increases to about 40%. Accordingly, Jung-gu is encouraging participation in the program by providing tumbler pouches to the first 100 people who register for the smoking cessation clinic to increase the success rate of quitting smoking.

The Jung-gu Public Health Center Smoking Cessation Clinic operates a smoking cessation support program for six months, considering that it takes about six months for the nicotine receptors to return to their pre-smoking state. Participants receive nine one-on-one customized consultations and are provided with smoking cessation aids and nicotine replacements for free. In addition, if necessary, smoking cessation drug treatment is linked to increase the possibility of successful smoking cessation.

In order to maintain the will to quit smoking, regular monitoring and checking of smoking status through cotinine measurement are also conducted. This is effective in preventing re-smoking and strengthening the motivation to maintain smoking cessation.

Jung-gu was recognized for its achievements in the smoking cessation support service sector by winning an award of excellence in the ‘2024 Seoul Smoke-Free City Creation’ last year. In 2023, a total of 788 people registered at the Jung-gu Smoking Cessation Clinic, and 262 of them succeeded in quitting smoking for more than 6 months, recording a success rate of 36.1%.

Kim Gil-seong, the mayor of Jung-gu, said, “Smoking not only affects an individual’s health, but also has a serious negative impact on the health of their family and neighbors through secondhand smoke,” and added, “I hope that Jung-gu residents who have resolved to quit smoking in the new year will visit the Jung-gu Health Center’s smoking cessation clinic and receive expert help to successfully quit smoking.”

The Jung-gu Public Health Center’s smoking cessation clinic operates from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on weekdays, and any resident wishing to quit smoking can register.
