Goyang Special City Mayor Lee Dong-hwan attended the New Year’s reception of the Korean branch of the Federation of Korean Associations in the Americas held at the Goyang YMCA on the 16th and expressed his will to realize a global self-sufficient city.

The Federation of Korean Associations in the Americas is an organization comprised of approximately 2.7 million Korean compatriots, including eight regional associations and approximately 180 local Korean associations, and works to promote the rights and interests of Korean compatriots in the Americas and strengthen their networks.

Mayor Lee Dong-hwan said in his congratulatory remarks, “We are doing our best to grow Goyang Special City into a global self-sufficient city together with the Korean community that is expanding its influence around the world,” and “We look forward to the active cooperation of the Korean community in the Americas so that the Goyang Free Economic Zone can be successfully promoted.” He then emphasized the importance of building partnerships to attract advanced companies and educational institutions overseas, and explained measures to enhance Goyang City’s global competitiveness.

Goyang City is planning various international events this year to strengthen its global network and lay the foundation for economic growth. In particular, the 10th UCLG ASPAC Goyang General Assembly, which will be held at KINTEX for three days from September 24 to 26, is a major event, with approximately 500 members from member cities expected to attend. This general assembly is expected to be an opportunity for Goyang City to establish itself as a key cooperation hub in the international community.

Attending this New Year’s greeting ceremony has the meaning of establishing a bridgehead for Goyang City to leap forward as a global city. Mayor Lee Dong-hwan said, “Goyang City will continue to cooperate with the international community to designate Goyang as a free economic zone and realize the vision of a global self-sufficient city.”

Goyang City plans to continue to strengthen its cooperative relationship with overseas Korean communities, including the Korean American Association, and to raise its international status in various fields, including economy, education, and culture.
