On the 27th, Yongin Special City Mayor Lee Sang-il held a special art lecture for 250 graduates of Pogok Agricultural Cooperative Housewives’ College in the Pogok Agricultural Cooperative conference room. In this lecture, he introduced various art movements such as hyper-realism, surrealism, and impressionism, and had an opportunity to learn about creativity and originality through masterpieces that contain the rich imagination of humans.

Mayor Lee Sang-il of Yongin Special City gave a special art lecture on the topic of “Abundant Human Imagination Seen through Paintings” to 250 members of the “Hometown Housewives’ Association” comprised of graduates of Pogok Agricultural Cooperative Housewives’ College. The lecture highlighted the importance of imagination by focusing on various art movements such as hyper-realism, surrealism, impressionism, and cubism, as well as the works of artists representing these movements.

This market introduced the works of painters Cho Deok-hyeon and Lee Seok-ju as representative examples of hyperrealism, and mentioned the works called ‘trompe l’oeil’ in French. In particular, it emphasized the amazing imagination contained in realistic paintings reminiscent of real things, citing the works of painters such as Barent van der Meer, Jan der Barth, and Charles Wilson Peale as examples.

In the section explaining surrealism, he introduced his unique worldview that expressed imagination that was impossible in reality through paintings such as René Magritte’s ‘Series of Light’, ‘Treason of Images’, and ‘Personal Values’.

He also explained the characteristics of Impressionism, which expressed the way objects change according to changes in light through art, citing Impressionist painter Claude Monet’s ‘Water Lilies Pond’ and ‘Rouen Cathedral Series’ as examples. He added a story about Monet’s work included in the collection of the late Samsung Group Chairman Lee Kun-hee, and emphasized the value and appeal of art.

This market explained the value of imagination that breaks the existing framework through the works of Pablo Picasso, a representative Cubist painter. In particular, through the examples of ‘Les Demoiselles d’Avignon’ and ‘Les Demoiselles d’Algiers’, it explained the process by which Picasso was recognized for his originality while pioneering a new genre called Cubism.

Next, he introduced Dadaist Marcel Duchamp’s ‘Fountain’ and ‘LHOOQ’ and the works of Salvador Dali, and explained how bold attempts to cross the boundaries of existing art changed the course of art history.

In the latter half of the special lecture, the work of Dutch abstract painter Piet Mondrian was used in the exterior design of Samsung Electronics’ Pyeongtaek semiconductor plant, showing how art can influence everyday industries and technologies.

Mayor Lee Sang-il concluded his lecture by saying, “Imagination is the source of human creativity, and we are trying to use imagination in administration through citizens’ diverse opinions and observations.” He emphasized that pictures are a good tool for fostering imagination, and said that he will continue to seek new ideas by communicating with citizens.

Before the special lecture, Pogok Agricultural Cooperative donated 10 million won in scholarships to foster future talents in Yongin. Mayor Lee Sang-il said, “I am grateful that Pogok Agricultural Cooperative has contributed to sharing its good results with the local community,” and added that the Agricultural Cooperative’s warm donation will be a great help in the development of the local community.
