Sejong City, Full-scale Promotion of Population Education Reflecting Regional Characteristics

Sejong Special Self-Governing City (Mayor Choi Min-ho) signed a ‘Sejong-specific Population Education Expansion Business Agreement’ with the Ministry of Health and Welfare, Sejong City Office of Education, and Population and Future Policy Research Institute on the 23rd in the Sejong Hall Sejong Room, and began to revitalize customized population education in the region. The agreement ceremony was attended by Sejong Mayor Choi Min-ho, First Vice Minister of Health and Welfare Lee Ki-il, Sejong City Superintendent of Education Choi Kyo-jin, and Population and Future Policy Research Institute Director Kim Tae-ryeon.

This agreement was prepared to respond to social issues such as population structure changes due to low birth rates and aging populations, and the crisis of local extinction. It focuses on building a cooperative system between organizations to effectively respond to the population crisis and developing and disseminating customized population education programs that reflect regional characteristics.

According to the agreement, the four organizations agreed to cooperate in ▲developing and operating Sejong-specific population education programs ▲expanding population education programs in school curricula ▲establishing pilot models for population education with regional characteristics, etc. In particular, Sejong City will systematically promote population education reflecting regional characteristics and residents’ needs, and will conduct full-scale population education for elementary, middle, and high school students starting next year. Afterwards, it plans to expand to customized education for various generations, such as infants, toddlers, and youth.

Mayor Choi Min-ho said, “In order to solve the low birth rate problem, it is essential to form positive values about marriage and childbirth,” and added, “We will establish a practical population policy that takes into account the regional characteristics of Sejong City and the life cycle of its residents, and actively support population education based on this.”

Lee Ki-il, First Vice Minister of Health and Welfare, said, “Sejong Special Self-Governing City will serve as an important test bed for population education,” and added, “I hope that this agreement will serve as an opportunity to spread an effective population education model that takes into account the characteristics of each region nationwide.”

Through this agreement, Sejong City is expected to take a leading role in solving population issues and contribute to improving the quality of life of residents and enhancing the sustainability of local communities.
