Yongin Special City (Mayor Lee Sang-il) announced that as of November this year, the number of registered pregnant women was 5,743, a 20.7% increase from the same period last year. The number of newborns also increased by 2.9% to 4,901. This is analyzed as the result of the city’s various support projects for pregnant women and infertile couples.

The number of cases of infertility treatment support increased by 64% from last year to 5,628, and the number of pregnant women who succeeded in conceiving through this increased by 192 from 716 last year to 908 this year. Starting this year, the city is the first in Gyeonggi Province to provide additional support for infertile couples’ share of treatment costs, thereby reducing the financial burden on infertile couples.

Based on these achievements, next year’s budget for overcoming the low birth rate will be expanded by 859 million won from this year to 12.862 billion won. In addition, a new support program for couples who want to have children will also be promoted.

The egg freezing treatment cost support project provides support of up to 2 million won for examination and treatment costs for egg retrieval, and is open to women aged 20 to 49 with an income of 180% or less of the median income who have resided in Gyeonggi Province for more than 6 months.

A new gamete cryopreservation support program is also being introduced for those expected to be permanently infertile. It provides support for the cost of freezing sperm and eggs, and men can receive up to 300,000 won and women can receive up to 2 million won.

Citizens can apply for the project through their local public health center, Government 24 (www.gov.kr), or the e-Health Center Public Portal (www.e-health.go.kr).

Mayor Lee Sang-il said, “As a result of promoting policies that are actually helpful in overcoming the low birth rate problem, we have achieved the results of increasing the number of pregnant women and newborns,” and added, “We will continue to do our best to provide tangible support policies and improve the childcare environment to create a city where it is good to raise children.”
