Gyeonggi Province is innovatively improving elderly care services by utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) technology , thereby supporting the health and emotional stability of the elderly .
These policies are positioned as key tasks for preparing for the future of Gyeonggi Province , which is entering a super-aged society where the elderly population will account for 20% of the total population by 2028. In particular , various AI- based care services are being piloted, centered around Gwanin-myeon, Pocheon-si , and this is suggesting a new paradigm for elderly care .
Gyeonggi Province has been providing various functions such as checking on one’s well-being , health management , and emotional support through an integrated service called ‘360° AI+ Care ‘ since this year . As part of this service, ‘ Always-convenient AI Care ‘ , an AI-based health management service using smartphones, has been introduced . This app is currently conducting a pilot project targeting 1,000 seniors over 65 years old , and checks blood flow by holding a finger up to a camera and informs of the status of cardiovascular health . In addition , the AI algorithm creates a health report , and through a self-examination for those at risk of dementia, the results are sent to the care manager to link them to the necessary welfare services .

Also noteworthy is the ‘AI Senior Citizen Safeguard ‘ service, which aims to prevent elder abuse . This service targets 100 people at high risk of abuse , and has the function of allowing the AI speaker to detect situations through voice and make an emergency call . It also detects keywords related to depression or loneliness through conversations with the elderly and notifies the control center . Gyeonggi Province is building a system to select high-risk groups and provide professional psychological counseling through this monitoring .
The AI Senior Chat Friend Service is a service in which artificial intelligence makes a phone call to seniors aged 65 or older once a week to check on them . If the call does not go through , a Gyeonggi Province Social Service Center employee has established a procedure to directly check. This service began in April and has recorded 128,907 cumulative service usage cases as of now. In an actual case , a senior citizen living alone in his 60s living in Paju-si was connected to a meal support service when he said “ there is nothing to eat at home “ during a call with an AI counselor .
Gyeonggi Province has designated Gwanin-myeon, Pocheon-si as an ‘AI Senior Care Town ‘ and is providing various AI care services . This area has the highest elderly population ratio at 46% , so care managers provide health , diet , and medication consultations over the phone , and doctors , nurses , and social workers also provide on-site visits when necessary . In addition , a digital experience space called ‘AI Sarangbang ‘ has been opened in a small library to support cognitive enhancement programs and AI dementia diagnosis .
‘AI Senior Care Town ‘ , a comprehensive AI care service, is improving the quality of life of the elderly by utilizing various technologies . For example , the AI Joyful Space is equipped with augmented reality (AR) sports equipment and step exercise mats that help prevent dementia , and a digital device utilization education program is also operated .
These programs help seniors more easily use digital devices , and there are also educational kiosks for seniors who have difficulty with contactless ordering and unmanned checkout .
In addition , Gyeonggi Province plans to conduct a pilot service to support transportation to hospitals and welfare centers for the elderly in areas without medical institutions in the province starting in January next year . This is considered an important measure to help the elderly more easily access the medical services they need .
Also noteworthy is the elderly health care business using AI robots . This business provides non-face-to-face health care services by distributing AI health care robots to 1,000 elderly people living alone who are vulnerable to health . The robots equipped with Chat GPT check their health status through two-way conversations and support meal and medication management . This business began in May , and a survey of 455 elderly users showed that depression indices and sleep quality improved .
Gyeonggi Province’s AI- based elderly care policy is making a great contribution to protecting the health and safety of the elderly , and is expected to continue to develop in the future . A Gyeonggi Province official said, “We are opening up new possibilities for elderly care through AI technology , and we plan to provide more diverse services in the future . “
