Goyang Special City (Mayor Lee Dong-hwan) signed a ‘Women-Friendly City Development Agreement’ with the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and was designated as a women-friendly city for the third consecutive time. This achievement, which has continued from the first designation in 2014 to 2019 and up to this year, is the result of policy achievements aimed at urban development, safety, care, and expansion of women’s social participation through equal participation of women and men.

A women-friendly city is a city where women and men equally participate in local policies and development processes, and where women’s capacity building, a safe living environment, and the establishment of a care system are promoted as priorities. The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family examines local governments with visions and execution capabilities that meet these goals and designates them as women-friendly cities.

Goyang City has been creating a female-friendly urban environment through various policies. For example, it has strengthened the safety environment for women by installing safe unmanned parcel boxes and operating a CCTV intelligent control system. In addition, it has expanded opportunities for women’s social and economic participation by operating the Goyang Women’s Entrepreneurship Support Center and the Goyang Women Workers’ Welfare Center.

We have also achieved results in the care sector. We have strengthened the care infrastructure by expanding the shared childcare center and the childcare project, thereby supporting the balance between work and family life. In addition, we have operated the Women-Friendly City Citizen Participation Group and established a public-private cooperation system to encourage citizens to participate in policies.

Goyang Special City Mayor Lee Dong-hwan emphasized, “The designation as a female-friendly city is a valuable achievement achieved through public-private cooperation,” and “We will continue to create a female-friendly city where all citizens are safe and happy through various policies.”

With this third consecutive designation as a women-friendly city, Goyang Special City has been able to implement more systematic and sustainable policies. The city plans to establish itself as a truly women-friendly city in the future by protecting women’s rights, strengthening safety infrastructure, and expanding the care system.
